Getting started

Alphie is an AI assistant: tell it in chat what you want to do and it answers questions, writes, plans and organizes material for you, and it remembers your preferences. This chapter covers signing up and signing in, what's on the page, and what to do first as a new user.

How do I sign up and sign in?

  • Sign in: on the login page enter your Username and Password and click Sign In. You can also click Continue with Google to sign in with a Google account.
  • Sign up: click Create one at the bottom of the login page, fill in Display Name, Username, Email (optional), Password (at least 6 characters) and an Invite Code, then click Create Account. You can't sign up with a username without an invite code.
  • The login page shows a Forgot password? link, but clicking it currently does nothing; there is no self-service password recovery on the page. While signed in you can change your password — see the "Account and privacy" chapter.

What's on the page after I sign in?

  • Top navigation bar: Dashboard (back to the main screen), Docs (opens this user guide as a web page in your browser), Download (the desktop client download page), and 中文 | EN in the top-right corner to switch the interface language.
  • Left sidebar, from top to bottom:
    • Chat: talk to Alphie — see the "Chat" chapter
    • Agent: your own agents — see the "Agents" chapter
    • Task: background tasks that are running or finished — see the "Tasks" chapter
    • File: files in Alphie Cloud and on your devices
    • Library: knowledge bases, skills and Persona (what Alphie knows about you) — see the "Knowledge bases" chapter
    • Message: unified inbox, contacts and email — see the "Messages and linked accounts" chapter
    • Settings: account, plan and keys, appearance, security, devices and linked accounts
  • Your name and a sign-out button are at the bottom of the sidebar.
  • On a phone or narrow window: tap the menu button in the top-left corner; all of the above are in that menu.

What should I do first as a new user?

  1. Just start chatting: type a real request in the input box at the bottom of the Chat page, e.g. "Translate this paragraph into Chinese". The Plan my day and Summarize buttons in the middle of the chat page are there to try. On the free plan you need to add your own API key before you can chat — see "Quota and API keys" for where.
  2. Let it get to know you: just say "Remember: I prefer short answers". What it remembers can be viewed under Library → Persona.
  3. Want it to work on your computer? Install the desktop client — see "Devices and the desktop client".
  4. Want it to answer from your own material? Create a knowledge base — see "Knowledge bases".

How do I switch the interface language? Where is dark mode?

  • Interface language: click 中文 or EN in the top-right corner, or change Language under Settings → General → Appearance.
  • Dark mode: Theme under Settings → General → Appearance.
  • Alphie usually replies in the language you write in; to fix a language, just tell it in chat.

What if I don't know how to do something?

Ask Alphie in chat, e.g. "Where do I add an API key?" or "How do I create an agent?". It answers from this guide with the page and the button to click.
